Expand the Box
For now, don’t add new licks, fast sequences, or complicated patterns. Instead, keep Box 1 as your home base and get comfortable temporarily moving outside the shape before returning to it.
Three Ways to Expand
1. Find the Major 3rd
Learn to quickly see and reach the nearby Major 3rds. Practice sliding into them musically from notes inside Box 1.
2. Reach for the ♭7
Experiment with sliding out of the normal position to another ♭7. Notice how landing on the root can make an idea feel complete, while moving to the ♭7 can make it feel like the phrase wants to continue.
3. Move to Familiar Pentatonic Notes
You can also slide out of position to notes that are already part of the Minor Pentatonic scale—such as the Perfect 5th—and then return to Box 1.
The Main Idea
Stay anchored to Box 1, move outside it briefly, then come home.
