This is the under appreciated key to guitar

Jul 19, 2025

Hey friends,

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about triads and seventh chords—not in an abstract theory way, but in the way they actually show up in our playing.

Because here’s what I’ve realized again and again:
Everything I do on guitar—rhythm, lead, comping, arranging—comes back to these shapes.

They’re not just foundational—they are the framework.
And the better I understand them, the more confident I feel in any musical situation.

I did a big new video on everything you need to know about chords, but I also decided to build something I wish I’d had from the start.

Every Guitar Chord Explained By A Music Professor

Over the past few months, I’ve been working behind the scenes on a new set of resources that simplify this core knowledge—and turn it into something you can actually use.

đŸ”č What’s new:

You can learn more about everything here: new lessons.

📘 The Chords Explained & Simplified eBook
A clear, structured guide to every essential chord—from triads to extensions. It’s theory that actually connects to the fretboard.

đŸ–„ïž Triads & Beyond (Part 1 of the Harmony System)
A super simple, surprisingly effective method for mastering triads across the neck. It’s the system that finally made CAGED unnecessary for me.

đŸ–„ïž 7ths & Beyond (Part 2 of the Harmony System)
Not just a “jazz” course—this one shows you how to use major 7, minor 7, dominant, and altered chords across styles, without getting lost in theory.

đŸ‘„ New Weekly Office Hours (Q&A)
Each week, you’ll be able to hop into a live group call and ask me anything: theory, fretboard questions, rhythm, practice structure—whatever’s holding you back.

I’m excited about these because I know how frustrating it is to feel like you understand bits and pieces of the fretboard—but can’t quite connect them.

Triads help you see the neck.
Sevenths give you expressive depth.
And together, they’re the key to nailing the changes—without relying on guesswork.

If you’re looking for clarity, this is where it starts.

Why Most Guitar Lessons Fail
I’ve had thousands of private music lessons in my life: -Guitar, singing, even violin to improve my guitar. -Sometimes two or three different teachers in the same week. -And I’ve been giving private lessons myself since I was barely two years into playing. If anyone can speak to the pros and cons of one-on-one lessons, it’s me. And here’s what I’ve learned: Weekly private lessons usually suck. ...
